One of the world’s largest forts, the Jaisalmer Fort in Rajasthan is also popular as ‘Sone Ka Quila’ – a name that goes perfectly with its appearance. Amidst the golden sands of the Thar Desert, the fort is the pride of Jaisalmer City and was built by Rao Jaisal, the Bhati Rajput ruler. A 30-feet tall wall protects the magnificent 25-feet tall Jaisalmer Fort. This fort aslo known as Sonar Quila, Golden Fort.

The fort complex has palaces, temples, wells, houses and havelis– all made of light yellow sandstone giving it a beautiful golden feel. During medieval times, the city played a major role in trade
with Persia,
Arabia, Egypt and Africa. The fort
contains 3 layers of walls. The outer or the lower layer is made out of solid
stone blocks and it reinforces the loose rubble of Trikuta Hill. The second, or
middle, wall snakes around the fort. From the innermost, or third, wall, the Rajput warriors
once hurled boiling oil and water as well as massive blocks of rock at their
enemies, who would become entrapped between the second and third walls. This
defenses of the fort include 99 bastions, of which 92 were built between the
period of 1633-47.
It is best to hire a rickshaw. You can also go walking from the main Jaisalmer city.
